An exterminator handles the pests a house actually gets — ants, spiders, mice, wasps, roaches, and the seasonal arrivals — either as a one-time treatment for a specific problem or as a recurring plan that keeps the perimeter treated year round. In Worcester a one-time general treatment runs $250 to $550, and a quarterly plan runs $400 to $700 a year after an initial service of $150 to $400. Which one you need depends entirely on whether you have a problem now or are trying to stop one starting.
One-time treatment or a recurring plan?
This is the only decision that materially changes what you pay, and most companies will steer you toward the plan without explaining the trade-off. Here it is plainly.
A one-time treatment is the right call when you have a specific, identifiable problem — carpenter ants in one wall, a wasp nest under the soffit, mice in the basement after the first cold night. It is priced as a job, it usually includes a follow-up visit inside 30 days, and when the problem is gone you are done. A recurring plan is the right call when the pressure is constant rather than episodic — a wooded lot, a shared wall in a triple-decker, a basement that has always had something in it. What a plan is not is a substitute for fixing the way pests are getting in. If mice are walking through a half-inch gap at the sill plate, spraying the outside four times a year will not stop them. That is exclusion work, and it is a separate job with a separate price.
What a general pest control treatment actually covers
The phrase "general pest control" means different things at different companies, so it is worth pinning down. In practice, a general treatment is aimed at the pests that move in and out of a structure from outside — the ones a treated perimeter genuinely stops.
- Covered by a general treatment. Pavement and odorous house ants, spiders, ground beetles, earwigs, silverfish, centipedes, crickets, cluster flies, boxelder bugs, stink bugs, occasional-invader mice, and paper wasps nesting under eaves.
- Usually included, but ask. Interior crack-and-crevice work on the first visit, exterior web and nest removal at accessible height, and monitoring in the basement and garage.
- Not covered — priced separately. Bed bugs, termites, German cockroach infestations, wildlife in the attic, and rodent exclusion work. Every one of those is a specialist job, and any company quoting them inside a $99 general plan is not going to do them properly.
- Never included anywhere. Structural repairs, moisture correction, and the carpentry that closes an entry point. Those are real work with real material costs, and a straight-dealing pest company will tell you so up front.
Why Worcester housing gets the pest problems it does
Worcester’s housing stock is unusually old for a city its size, and that shapes the calls. Three-deckers and two-families built between 1890 and 1930 make up a large share of the city, and they share three features that pests exploit: fieldstone or rubble foundations with mortar joints that have opened up, balloon-framed walls that give a mouse a clear vertical run from the sill to the attic, and shared walls and utility chases between units, which is how a problem in one apartment becomes a problem in three.

Then there is the season. Central Massachusetts has a genuinely four-season pest calendar, and the calls arrive in a predictable order: ants and termite swarmers in April and May; mosquitoes, ticks, and wasps through the summer; rodents and overwintering cluster flies and stink bugs from the first cold night in September; and bed bugs and German cockroaches all year, because those two never cared what month it is.
Reading a pest control quote without getting caught
There are four things worth checking on any quote, and they are the four that most often cost people money later.
- What is the initial service fee, separately from the plan price? A "$39 a month" plan with a $399 initial is $867 in year one, not $468. Both numbers are legitimate; quoting only one is not.
- What is the contract term, and what does cancelling cost? Twelve- and twenty-four-month agreements with early-termination fees are standard across the industry. Ask for the number in writing before you sign, not after.
- Are callbacks between scheduled visits included? On a genuine plan they are. If they are billed, the plan is a discount scheme rather than a guarantee.
- Does the price assume interior treatment, exterior only, or both? Most recurring plans are exterior-only after the first visit, which is usually the right approach — but you should know that is what you are buying.
