Termites in Central Massachusetts — what is actually here
Massachusetts sits near the northern edge of meaningful termite pressure in the United States, which leads to a persistent local belief that we do not have them. We do. Eastern subterranean termites (Reticulitermes flavipes) are established across Worcester County and are behind essentially every residential termite call in the region. Drywood termites, which drive much of the industry in the south, are not established here.
Subterranean termites live in soil and need contact with moisture. They reach a structure either by building shelter tubes up a foundation wall or through direct wood-to-soil contact, and they consume the softer spring growth of the wood, leaving the harder grain behind — which is why termite-damaged wood looks layered and hollow rather than simply chewed.
The pace is worth being honest about. Because the season here is shorter than in the south, damage generally accumulates over years rather than months. That is not a reason to ignore it — it is a reason not to panic and sign a same-day contract with a technician who has just told you the house is about to fall down. A termite finding warrants a considered decision inside a few weeks, not inside an hour.
The signs, in the order people usually notice them
- A swarm. The most common first sign and the most alarming. On a warm day in April or May, usually after rain, winged reproductives emerge — dark bodies, four wings of equal length, straight waist. A pile of discarded wings on a windowsill or near a basement bulkhead is the classic evidence. Flying ants, by contrast, have a pinched waist, elbowed antennae, and forewings noticeably longer than the hind wings.
- Mud tubes. Pencil-width earthen tubes running up the inside or outside of a foundation wall, across a pier, or up a support post. They are how subterranean termites keep humidity around themselves while crossing exposed surfaces, and they are close to conclusive.
- Hollow-sounding or crumbling wood. Tap a sill, a joist end, or a basement post. Damaged wood sounds papery, and a screwdriver pushes in with little resistance. Look at the surface for soil-packed galleries running along the grain.
- Buckling paint or bubbled surfaces on trim. Often mistaken for moisture damage, and sometimes it is — but it is also what a gallery under a painted surface looks like.
- Doors and windows sticking with no other explanation. A later-stage sign, and reason to get an inspection quickly.
Barrier or bait — which one, and why
These are genuinely different strategies and both are legitimate. The choice depends on the structure and on what you want the outcome to be.
A liquid barrier treats the soil around and beneath the foundation with a non-repellent termiticide, creating a treated zone that termites pass through and carry back to the colony. It goes in through a trench around the exterior and, where a slab or interior footings require it, through drilled holes in concrete that are then patched. It gives immediate protection, has the longest track record, and typically holds for five to ten years. Its downsides are that it is invasive to install — trenching and drilling — and it tells you nothing afterwards, because there is nothing to monitor.
A bait system places in-ground stations around the perimeter at regular intervals. Termites find them while foraging, feed on a growth-regulating bait, and carry it back, which over months eliminates the colony. It is far less invasive, it works on structures where trenching is impractical, and — the underrated advantage — it keeps telling you what is happening, because every inspection shows whether there is activity. Its downsides are that it works over months rather than immediately, and it carries an ongoing annual monitoring cost that never ends.
Rough guidance: if you have active termites eating a structural member right now, a barrier gets you protection immediately. If you are protecting a house preventatively, or the foundation makes trenching a problem, or you value being able to see whether pressure exists, bait is the better fit. Plenty of jobs use both — a spot treatment on the active area plus a bait system for ongoing management.
Buying or selling a house: the WDI report
A wood-destroying insect inspection, usually called a WDI or termite inspection, is the report a lender or a buyer asks for during a property transaction. It documents visible evidence of termites, carpenter ants, powderpost beetles, and other wood-boring insects, along with conducive conditions such as wood-to-soil contact and excess moisture.
It costs $75 to $200 as a standalone inspection in the Worcester area. Some companies offer it free when it is bundled with a treatment quote, and it is worth being clear-eyed about that: an inspection paid for by the company hoping to sell the treatment has an obvious tension in it. For a purchase, paying for an independent inspection is usually money well spent.
What a WDI report does not do is guarantee the absence of termites. It records visible evidence in accessible areas — it cannot see inside a finished wall or under a slab. Read the limitations section rather than just the box that says "no evidence found".
What makes a Worcester house attractive to termites
Termite work is more effective when the conditions that invited them get fixed as well, and most of these are inexpensive.
- Wood-to-soil contact. Deck posts set directly in earth, fence rails against siding, wooden bulkhead frames rotting into the ground, and siding buried by regraded soil or built-up mulch. This is the single biggest contributor.
- Mulch against the foundation. Keep a bare inspection strip of at least six inches between mulch and siding, and do not let mulch depth build up near the house.
- Poor drainage. Blocked gutters, downspouts discharging beside the foundation, and grading that runs toward the house all keep the soil at the footing damp, which is exactly what subterranean termites need.
- Firewood and lumber stored against the house. A stack against a wall is a colony with a bridge. Keep it off the ground and away from the structure.
- Damp crawl spaces. A crawl space with no vapour barrier and standing humidity is a standing invitation, and it also drives the carpenter ant calls.
