Why nests get treated at dusk

Social wasps forage during daylight and return to the nest at night. Treating in the middle of the day kills the workers present and leaves the foragers to return to a treated nest, mill around the site, and remain a hazard for days. Treating at dusk or just after dark catches essentially the whole colony at home.

The second reason is the queen. Removing the visible nest without eliminating the colony achieves nothing if the queen and brood survive; treating when the population is concentrated is what ends it in one visit.

Cool temperatures help too — wasps are far less active below about 50°F, which is why late-season and early-morning work is safer. It is also why nests found in October are often already dying naturally, and worth asking about before paying to remove one.

The dangerous version of DIY

A paper wasp nest the size of a hand on an open porch rail, treated at dusk from a safe distance with a jet aerosol and a clear escape route, is a reasonable thing to do yourself. Most of the rest is not, and the ways it goes wrong are predictable.

A yellow jacket ground nest looks like a small hole and is a colony of thousands. Disturbing it — mowing over it is the classic — produces a mass defensive response, and people get stung dozens of times running.

A nest in a wall void treated with a spray from outside creates a specific and nasty failure: blocked at the exterior entrance and driven inward, the colony chews through the interior wall surface into the living space. Void nests need dust rather than liquid, applied so the wasps carry it through the nest, and the entrance left open until the colony is dead.

Ladder work near an active nest is the other common injury — not the stings, the fall. And anyone with a known sting allergy should not be doing any of it, at any size, at any distance.

If someone is stung and shows swelling beyond the sting site, difficulty breathing, tightness in the throat, dizziness, or a widespread rash, that is a 911 call. Anaphylaxis can develop within minutes and does not wait for a phone consultation.

Closing the cavity so it does not repeat

Removing a nest and leaving the cavity open is half a job. Wasps do not reuse an old nest, but a cavity that suited one queen suits the next one, and the same soffit corner or the same gap behind a fascia board gets colonised year after year.

The work that ends the cycle is sealing the void: closing the gap at the soffit or fascia, screening the vent, filling the rodent burrow that a yellow jacket colony took over, or fitting a proper cover over the opening.
